Customized Journal Lubricating Pad Manufacturing and Product Support
Pads built to fit your equipment
Given the diversity of plain bearing locomotive cellar and journal box dimensions, we can’t use a one-size-fits-all approach. Instead, our cotton lubricating pads are custom designed to maximize surface area contact and minimize premature wear for each piece of equipment. We build lubricators for standard gauge main line steam locomotives with 14” long bearings all the way down to 15” gauge equipment with 3” long bearings. Eqipment ranges from passenger and freight cars, steam locomotives and tenders, street cars, and even axles on a turntable! We also help design pads and restraints to fit special applications like traction motor support bearings.
Traction motor bearing lubrication pads for vintage diesel electric and interurban cars
We created a large “french fry” that lubricates the traction motor bearings on a Devenport center cab diesel. It has a handle part way up for easy removal for replacement or inspection.
Installation and System Development
We also help customers design and install lubricating pads to accommodate special applications. These include designs to accommodate oil feeds to driver cellars, twill tape loops to secure pads against rolling, and sizing to fit custom cellar shapes.
Cotton waste for oil cups and small cellars
Mixed sizes of fine undyed, natural cotton waste for oil cups and small cellars. Also useful as journal packing in small boxes (generally less than 15” gauge) where pads are not cost effective or impractical.
Animals from genuine pad trimmings and test runs
If you don’t have a steam locomotive or rolling stock but still want a piece of the action, you can order a genuine journal pad animal. We use the same high quality tufted cotton to make sheep, goats, rams, bison, llamas, and now woolly mammoths!
